PAUL SANDBY R.A.

(1731 -1809)

Banqueting Hall, Whitehall and Scotland Yard

Banqueting Hall, Whitehall and Scotland Yard
Watercolour
15 x 21 inches (38 x 53 cm)

Engraved: Edward Rooker for John Boydell, 1777
Acquired by The Morgan Library & Museum, New York on the Sunny Crawford von Bülow Fund 1978, in honour of Sir Paul Getty.

Provenance

Private Collection, UK

This unusually fresh and complete watercolour shows Whitehall with part of the Banqueting House designed by Inigo Jones. Although Sandby painted views in and around London such as those of Hyde Park and Bayswater, only a handful are of this scale and grandeur, which suggests that the present work was painted for a specific commission. In this composition, the perfect assimilation of the elegant figures with the complex architectural perspective shows the artist at the height of his powers.
