This on-the-spot watercolour which has only recently surfaced, shows Windsor Forest, the great expanse (5000 acres) of parkland that surrounds the castle. This remarkably sensitive watercolour calls to mind the opening lines of Alexander Pope’s poem Windsor Forest:

 

 

Thy forests, Windsor! and thy green retreats,

At once the Monarch's and the Muse's seats,

Invite my lays. Be present, sylvan maids!

Unlock your springs, and open all your shades.
